I just heard Christiane Amanpour use a fantastic quote from Edward R. Murrow's keynote address at the 1958 Radio-Television News Director's Association annual meeting, referring (obviously) to the medium of television: "This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box."

The very first thing that came to mind after hearing those words is that Rupert Murdoch should get in touch with Murrow's estate to see about using that. If they ever get tired of "Fair and Balanced", "Wires and Lights in a Box" would be a great slogan for Fox News. Hell of a lot more accurate, too.

Vacation so far is going fantastically well. Heading down tomorrow with Matt and Sarah for a week in Florida. I'll likely be most of the way off the grid for that week; I'll have my phone, but I'm not sure about interweb access. I'm pretty confident in my belief that Matt will shrivel and die if he has to go a week without the internet, so there should be something, but how much and how frequent I'm not sure. Don't get in any trouble while I'm gone, for real this time, because I won't be around to help out.
